Lois Sattler is an American artist who is best known for her porcelain ceramic sculptures. Her well-collected handcrafted ceramic sculptures are both decorative and functional. Inspired by her love of nature, she has dedicated years perfecting an artistic style which reflects the natural beauty surrounding her. Having honed her craft at painting, drawing and sculpture, Lois has developed a unique and personal way of hand-building porcelain in her Venice, California studio. Lois’s art is a departure from the norm, raising ordinary porcelain pieces to new heights with her imaginative twists and natural freeform shapes that add interest, energy and fun. Her one of a kind pieces have been a favorite of collectors and she  has been represented in museums and galleries across the globe.

Her work has been featured in Pasadena Magazine with exhibitions at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Newport Harbor Museum of Art, and Laguna Beach Museum of Art. Recent exhibitions have included “Ten Women” at the Marie Baldwin Gallery and “Divino Feminino” curated by Alcinda Saphira and presented by Saphira & Ventura Gallery with support from the Consulate General of Brazil in Los Angeles and the New York Pro Art Society.

In the 1970’s she met Sueo Serisawa, one of the leading figures in the Los Angeles-based Modernist movements in art. Serisawa helped position the West Coast as a fertile and revolutionary art center, which Lois became a part of. Upon meeting him she explained how she viewed her pursuit of art as her hobby. His response to her, “No, it’s not. I will make it your way of life.”

From her early mentorship with Serisawa, Lois continued to grow through classes and private lessons with artists she met in southern California.

In the early 1990’s Lois joined STAR Education, a non-profit organization leading in innovative educational programming and community-based cultural enrichment projects. Since its inception STAR services has grown to serve more than 500 schools in over 60 school districts, reaching thousands of students and their families every year. Teaching children the power of art is a gift that gives both ways for Lois, “I notice that when kids have challenges and when they dive into art, their focus changes and their difficulties disappear. Art makes things better, whether you are a kid or an adult. It is a magical process.’

Artist’s Statement: An artist mirrors the soul in an intimate, personal experience bringing beauty into the lives of others. Art is transformative and healing, enhancing your life in every way, every day.
